Katashi and Ghost*
So since I rambled about the orientations, the thing about Chad and Shiro becoming an Odd Couple sort of exploded?
Now it's like, the Very Second that Chad finds out Shiro is out of The Headspace and back in his own body (and crashing at Livi's place because she was the first person he could find and also he considers her a sister of sorts), he hops a plane down to Easton to retrieve him. Shiro is both surprised and touched. Also, the Very Second he expresses an inkling to go find Ozoka, Chad shuts that shit down hard. They're both fully aware of how completely horrible (understatement!) he's been to Brandon and Max; hell Chad has felt every bit of what Max had to endure, so that shit is just Right Out. No, not even if there's a chance that Ozoka getting his dead lover back could ~~*magically fix!*~~ him, because that shit isn't Shiro's responsibility. Besides, Chad reasons quite logically, who's to say Ozoka wouldn't fall right back into his abusive ways anyway, which puts Shiro in unnecessary danger?
So no! Chad whisks Shiro back to New York with him and now they're roommates. And each other's wingmen, not that Chad really needs one as he's gotten himself a lovely girlfriend** by this point. That said, Shiro doesn't mind talking to Sanya about what a good and helpful friend Chad has been to him, and Chad will totally take those brownie points. Meanwhile, Chad stays on the lookout for a decent guy for Shiro when he can, because if he's going to date someone at least that someone can be not an abusive psychopath, damn it. He has a good idea of what to look for in a guy, anyway, thanks to spending so much time with Shiro and sharing headspace with Max.
AND THEN this whole ridiculous scenario popped into my head, where Chad's been working at Business Corp (American Business Corp for now, or ABC), where he's basically a glorified mailroom guy, and comes upon this boardroom situation where they're discussing a merger or something with Japanese Business Corp (JBC for the time being) but oh no their translator is out with a flu, how will we communicate? So Chad's all "fffff let me talk to them" and apparently while in The Headspace he learned pretty darn good Japanese from Shiro and in turn Shiro learned pretty darn good English from him (also, manners! Chad was a rude piece of shit previously), so the meeting goes insanely well and the board members are super impressed. Instant promotion to backup translator!
So the board are like "omg where did you learn such good Japanese wtf" and he's like "oh I just learned it from my roommate nbd" so they basically beg him to see if Shiro would consider coming on board as a language instructor, because honestly for this merger thing to work more of their employees need to speak their new partners' language. Shiro agrees, and has most of the office speaking pretty darn good Japanese within a reasonable amount of time. My timeline's a little fuzzy, honestly.
SO THEN some other meeting with JBC comes up, this time with some Very Important Board Members who weren't at the previous meetings because reasons? But they're crazy high up like the CEOs and such or whatever. It's important. No pressure, Chad! Yeah right; he's a total nervous wreck over it, but he hides it well. So they have their meeting, and the JBC board members are very impressed with their American associates' new Japanese skills, so they ask Chad who taught everyone. And well fuck this has gone so well so far but he's still stressed out over the whole thing so maybe he said something like "my partner" rather than "my roommate" even though they sound nothing alike (partners in crime? but without the crime) but everyone just kind of rolls with it. Maybe it was a misunderstanding all around, but somehow they get the impression that Shiro and Chad are dating. Because of course. Half the office ships it, probably.
Right, so the JBC guys would like to meet the person who gave such great instruction, so they bring Shiro in to meet everyone, and heck. One of the board members turns out to be freaking Hideki Inoue, who just happens to be Shiro's father. So, imagine his surprise at seeing his dead son alive and well (and working in Business, which is what he had originally hoped for actually). It's all very confusing and not quite explainable, but Mr. Inoue for the moment just goes with being overjoyed that somehow(?!?) Shiro isn't dead after all! And! It's wonderful that he's found himself a nice, respectable young man to be with, rather than that lout he had been with before. Turns out, Shiro's parents were pretty alright with him being gay; they just really hated Ozoka. They were sure he was dangerous, and unfortunately they were right.
Aaaaand right about there is when Chad realizes he gave them the wrong idea. Oh no. So he tries to fix what's quickly becoming a mess, but everything is happening so fast now that it just doesn't take. And damn it, Shiro's just rolling with it all because maybe he's in shock over not only seeing his father again, but also being immediately accepted.*** So Mr. Inoue insists on flying them both to Japan, because Shiro must see his mother (and yes- after the reception he's just gotten from his father Shiro is absolutely down to see his mother again), and also he's got a little sister to meet.****
So! Guess they're going to Japan. Chad's freaking out about the whole thing; damn it, he's straight, even has a girlfriend right the fuck now, ffs! Shiro does his best to calm him down, but basically asks him to please just go with it for now, he hasn't seen his family in so long and he just wants it to be a happy occasion, please please they don't have to do anything 'boyfriendy' and can absolutely 'break up' after this whole mess is over, but please just pretend for a little while? So Chad caves, partly because he's not sure if stressing Shiro out too much over it could kill him again(?), and, well. Free vacation, I guess?
He has a great time trying to explain the whole thing to Sanya. While she's sympathetic to the issue, she also thinks it's kind of hilarious, like some sort of romantic comedy, almost. She flat out tells him, in a totally teasing sort of way, that by the Rules of Romantic Comedies, he and Shiro will be dating for real by the end of it. Hell, she knows they're close, and she knows Shiro is lowkey crushing on Chad already. It's totally possible, maybe, is what she thinks, and maybe also she doesn't mind if her boyfriend comes back with a boyfriend. Maybe she sort of lowkey ships it a little bit. Chad flusters very badly at the tease.
So off they go to Japan. Mrs. Inoue is beyond ecstatic to see her son again, and like her husband accepts him immediately. She also takes an instant liking to Chad (he's polite! he's got a respectable job! he's obviously been taking good care of her boy!) and welcomes him to the family. This does not help Chad's flusterment. Hanako is also overjoyed to meet her brother, though she's pretty confused about him not being dead like she'd always been told? But whatever! She's got a brother now! She likes Chad too, and will definitely be at least a little wink-wink-nudge-nudge with Shiro about how good looking he is. So it's a very happy reunion.
I haven't quite worked out what happens from there. Maybe Sanya's prediction will come true, maybe not. Will totally admit I rather like the idea. We'll see, I guess!
*That's what they called each other before they got around to learning their actual names. Katashi because Chad just seemed like an angry hardass to Shiro, and Ghost since Shiro tended to look pretty incorporeal in The Headspace. Chad thought he was either a ghost or a hallucination until they actually started talking.
**Her name is Sanya, and she needs more development. She has a life outside of being Chad's girlfriend. But she's getting her own tag now, dammit.
***Like, Shiro died back in 1990 or so, only he actually didn't? But the Inoues cremated his body, or so they thought. The whole reason Shiro didn't go find his parents when he woke up back in his own body (!with a body! that surely should have been buried or cremated by now? he still hasn't figured out the whys there) is because he was sure they wouldn't believe he was who he said he was, and that would just bring unnecessary upset to everyone involved.
****Their names are Tama and Hanako, for future reference. I haven't written much about Shiro's family at all, and I haven't forgotten yet, but just in case. Hana would be a teenager by this point, I think.
